Saudi Arabia Imports Over $5 Billion Worth of Food & Beverage Products a Year, in Response to Increasing Demand

Saudi demand for food and beverage products is enormous. It’s being fuelled by rising disposable income in the economically-flourishing kingdom, an increasing taste among a growing population for fast-food, and a liquidity-fuelled construction boom spawning ever-more hotels and restaurants. Saudi demand for food and beverage products is so big that huge quantities have to be imported. Over $5 billion worth of food and beverage products are currently imported by Saudi every year. That constitutes a whopping 63% of total Middle East food and beverage imports. The investment opportunities generated by this massive reliance on imports are obvious. For bulk commodity suppliers in particular the rapidly-expanding Saudi food and beverage market constitutes a wealth of potential. From soft drinks, juice, natural foods and breakfast cereals, to cakes and biscuits, edible oils, and poultry, it’s all in rising demand.

On the beverage side, Saudis’ newfound excess liquidity has combined with the kingdom’s thirst-fuelling hot climate to push up demand for soft drinks, by an exhilarating 10% a year. The soft drinks sector alone generates annual sales in Saudi Arabia of well over a billion dollars.

Ever-more Sophisticated, Health-Conscious Generation Drives Up Demand for Health Foods & Drinks

Saudi Arabia’s increasingly health-conscious, educated, sophisticated younger generation is creating rising demand for natural and health drinks and foods. In fact, such is the impact of an ever-more healthy-living-oriented generation of Saudis that the kingdom’s health and natural foods sector is one of the fastest-growing in the country.

Demand for convenience and fast-food is being spurred not just by an increasingly well-off younger Saudi generation, but also by the kingdom’s six-million-strong expatriate community – which is also pushing up demand for ethnic food.
